The Colón Free Zone (ZLC), one of the largest duty-free trade centers in the world, has launched a series of initiatives to modernize and optimize its freight forwarding services in order to maintain its competitiveness in the global market. Among the key measures is the implementation of a new digital platform that allows for the electronic management of all customs procedures, reducing cargo clearance times by 30%.

This digital system enables logistics operators to track their shipments in real-time, optimizing workflows and minimizing administrative errors. Additionally, a continuous training program has been implemented for employees and businesses operating in the ZLC, focusing on the use of new technologies, international regulations, and best practices in supply chain management.

Jorge Fernández, the director of the ZLC, emphasized that these initiatives not only aim to improve operational efficiency but also attract new foreign investments to the area, strengthening Colón’s position as a key logistics hub for the Americas. Among the companies already expressing interest in these improvements are multinational corporations such as FedEx and DB Schenker, who plan to expand their operations in the region.

Furthermore, the ZLC has formed partnerships with government entities to expedite the inspection and clearance of goods, which has been well received by freight forwarding operators. These modernizations are expected to significantly improve delivery times and reduce operational costs.
